Summary

10 hours, 30 minutes

In the vein of Mary Beth Keane’s Ask Again, Yes and Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney's The Nest, Tracey Lange’s We Are the Brennans explores the staying power of shame―and the redemptive power of love―in an Irish Catholic family torn apart by secrets。

When twenty-nine-year-old Sunday Brennan wakes up in a Los Angeles hospital, bruised and battered after a drunk driving accident she caused, she swallows her pride and goes home to her family in New York。 But it’s not easy。 She deserted them all―and her high school sweetheart―five years before with little explanation, and they've got questions。

Sunday is determined to rebuild her life back on the east coast, even if it does mean tiptoeing around resentful brothers and an ex-fiancé。 The longer she stays, however, the more she realizes they need her just as much as she needs them。 When a dangerous man from her past brings her family’s pub business to the brink of financial ruin, the only way to protect them is to upend all their secrets―secrets that have damaged the family for generations and will threaten everything they know about their lives。 In the aftermath, the Brennan family is forced to confront painful mistakes―and ultimately find a way forward, together。

The Brennans is a story about family。 A family deeply rooted in their Irish heritage and strong Catholic faith。 They stand by one another through thick and thin。 They are bound by secrets。 Secrets that haunt。 Secrets that follow causing a wake of traumatic events。 I was totally invested in this story。 A plot that weaves many layers and I felt every bit of it right up the shocking ending that wrapped it all together。 What a powerful and deeply felt story。 One of the best books I've read this year The Brennans is a story about family。 A family deeply rooted in their Irish heritage and strong Catholic faith。 They stand by one another through thick and thin。 They are bound by secrets。 Secrets that haunt。 Secrets that follow causing a wake of traumatic events。 I was totally invested in this story。 A plot that weaves many layers and I felt every bit of it right up the shocking ending that wrapped it all together。 What a powerful and deeply felt story。 One of the best books I've read this year。 Lange is a writer to watch。 What a masterful debut。Dawnny Ruby Novels N Latte Hudson Valley NY 。。。more

Tracey Lange's debut novel, "We Are the Brennans" is a marvelous book about a dysfunctional family。 The Brennans are loving despite their emotional problems。 Anyone can read the synopsis online。 The crux of the story Is that family protects each other。 "They may make mistakes and hurt one another, But in the end they come together。" I loved the characters and the story line。 I am looking forward to more novels written by the author! We Are the Brennans was almost a 3-star book for me, but it actually got better as I read it so I bumped it up to 4 stars。We Are the Brennans is basically an episode of "Brothers and Sisters" or "Parenthood。" But for some reason it really hit the spot。 It wasn't too gripping, or too dramatic, but it just hit the right notes and the story was interesting。It had all of the qualities I like: well-written, well-paced, interesting story, and decent characters。I recommend, even though I wasn't crazy a We Are the Brennans was almost a 3-star book for me, but it actually got better as I read it so I bumped it up to 4 stars。We Are the Brennans is basically an episode of "Brothers and Sisters" or "Parenthood。" But for some reason it really hit the spot。 It wasn't too gripping, or too dramatic, but it just hit the right notes and the story was interesting。It had all of the qualities I like: well-written, well-paced, interesting story, and decent characters。I recommend, even though I wasn't crazy about the ending! 。。。more

I am not quite sure why everyone seems so enthralled with this title。 I don't want to trash a debut novel, but this title was not quite what it was presented to be。 The characters are boring and very simple。 While the reader can see why they made the life mistakes they did, the interactions between them when secrets come out is way to bland and off-putting。 I guess the presence of Irish guilt is more powerful than open discussion of emotions, but too much was wrapped up too simplistically for my I am not quite sure why everyone seems so enthralled with this title。 I don't want to trash a debut novel, but this title was not quite what it was presented to be。 The characters are boring and very simple。 While the reader can see why they made the life mistakes they did, the interactions between them when secrets come out is way to bland and off-putting。 I guess the presence of Irish guilt is more powerful than open discussion of emotions, but too much was wrapped up too simplistically for my tastes。 And the "big twist" at the end was telegraphed way too early in the book to not see coming a mile away。 To put it mildly, the book starts slow, builds drama with the introduction of a really shady character, and then seemingly doesn't know what to do to dispose of him properly and falls on a cliche to sum it all up。 Plus, the main romantic interests are too disconnected to root for or feel bad for during the events of the novel。 I guess I am in the minority looking at the other reviews, but I found this book to be rather pedestrian in plot and development。 。。。more

Thank you so much to Celadon Books for sending me this physical copy of Tracey’s debut novel。 This book is to go on sale August 3!Brief Synopsis:After a drunk driving incident, Sunday Brennan decides to go back home to see her family。 It’s not an easy task as 5 years ago she got up and left everyone behind without little warning, including her high school sweetheart。 When an incident threatens to shut down her family’s pub, Sunday realizes that everyone has been hiding secrets the last couple ye Thank you so much to Celadon Books for sending me this physical copy of Tracey’s debut novel。 This book is to go on sale August 3!Brief Synopsis:After a drunk driving incident, Sunday Brennan decides to go back home to see her family。 It’s not an easy task as 5 years ago she got up and left everyone behind without little warning, including her high school sweetheart。 When an incident threatens to shut down her family’s pub, Sunday realizes that everyone has been hiding secrets the last couple years and whole family is forced to confront their mistakes with each other & find a way forward。My thoughts/opinions:What a gripping read! It seems like every debut novel I have read this year has just sucked me in! This book is written in multiple POVs but the names are clearly labelled at the beginning of every chapter so you aren’t confused as to who you switched too。 The chapters are short, which works great with how the novel is written as you are left wanting more after each character’s chapter is complete。 I read through this one decently fast so I can see how everything connected。 It’s a flawed family but you root for them throughout the novel。 I think this is worth a read for 2021 if you can squeeze it in! 。。。more

Wow, loved this family drama。 Could kinda tell where the story was going at one point but I loved it nonetheless。 The different point of views and how the story flowed from chapter to chapter was great。 Highly recommend if you like modern family dramas。

Wow, I love contemporary fiction but this one was a slow burn that I could not put down! The story focuses on the Brennan’s and Irish American family in New York。 The mother passed before the book began and the remaining family contains 3 brothers, 1 sister, 1 father, and a best friend who is actually more like family。 When Sunday, the daughter, is in a terrible accident in LA after disappearing 5 years prior the family finally begins to come back together。This novel takes place through several p Wow, I love contemporary fiction but this one was a slow burn that I could not put down! The story focuses on the Brennan’s and Irish American family in New York。 The mother passed before the book began and the remaining family contains 3 brothers, 1 sister, 1 father, and a best friend who is actually more like family。 When Sunday, the daughter, is in a terrible accident in LA after disappearing 5 years prior the family finally begins to come back together。This novel takes place through several prospective and I think it gives it such an air of complete understanding of a family dynamic。 I found so many ways to resonate with the different characters even though I come from a completely different life。 Tracey Lange brings the world of the Brennan’s to life。 While it had a wonderful ending like many contemporary fiction novels I just wanted to stay with these characters longer。 。。。more

3。5 - a well-written and interesting family drama。 I loved the structure of the alternating POVs and how each chapter picked up literally from where the last left off。The characters come to life quickly, though I wanted to scream at all of them to just talk to each other for crying out loud。 Things got a little repetitive by the end and the ending fell a tiny bit flat for me but overall an enjoyable read!

I was pulled right in, reached a part that made me not want to put it down, but。。。 then it dragged on about the same stuff a bit too long and repeatedly and I found myself drifting。 Then I guessed the ending, and was hoping for a different one than I got。

Didn’t connect to the characters, the plot was choppy and resolved mid way through the book, no depth to the family’s back story。 Could have had potential since I love family dramas, but nothing pulled at the heart strings。 The writing was bland。 Certain parts were fast paced but the excitement would end quickly。 Looks like I’m in the minority with my thoughts on this one。。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The more I think about this, the more fucked to it is。 1) Sunday’s reason for leaving seemed dumb。 You are going to leave everything you know over that?2) The author tried to play up Mauras part in her leaving, but it sounded like Sunday knew what she was going to say anyway。3) Denny is sorta a loser。4) Maybe my timeline is off, but Sunday leaves and Kale almost instantly impregnates another girl??5) I wanted kale and Sunday to end up together, but Lukes life being messed up because Kale is an i The more I think about this, the more fucked to it is。 1) Sunday’s reason for leaving seemed dumb。 You are going to leave everything you know over that?2) The author tried to play up Mauras part in her leaving, but it sounded like Sunday knew what she was going to say anyway。3) Denny is sorta a loser。4) Maybe my timeline is off, but Sunday leaves and Kale almost instantly impregnates another girl??5) I wanted kale and Sunday to end up together, but Lukes life being messed up because Kale is an idiot is just sad6) I guess we’re all ok with murder now? I found all of these relationships extremely relatable and realistic。 This is especially true in the marriages in the book and the types of relationships each couple had。 The characters were all flawed but very likable and seemed to try and be better people。 It was nuanced without being pretentious。。。I found it to be excellent。

I know I am in the minority here but I didn't love this one, heck i am not sure I even liked it。 The characters just didn't feel believable。 I picked the because the author was compared to Ann Patchett。 I assure you that is not the case。 I know I am in the minority here but I didn't love this one, heck i am not sure I even liked it。 The characters just didn't feel believable。 I picked the because the author was compared to Ann Patchett。 I assure you that is not the case。 。。。more

*4。5⭐I didn't think I would enjoy following another family's drama as much as I did。 The Brennans are a hardworking family with enough social status to have their secrets be scandalous。 The fallout of past trauma is heartbreaking to listen to, and as someone without a large family, it is nice to see how the family comes together despite the past。 Everyone is flawed, everyone has their baggage, and everyone has an opinion。 Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio, and Celadon books for allowing me *4。5⭐I didn't think I would enjoy following another family's drama as much as I did。 The Brennans are a hardworking family with enough social status to have their secrets be scandalous。 The fallout of past trauma is heartbreaking to listen to, and as someone without a large family, it is nice to see how the family comes together despite the past。 Everyone is flawed, everyone has their baggage, and everyone has an opinion。 Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio, and Celadon books for allowing me to listen to the audiobook in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

At first, I thought it was going to be a generic story with a predictable ending, but I was happy to be proven wrong。 This story took a few twists I did not seem coming, and their family values made their characters much more likeable。

I freakin love sibling relationships, and this hit me in all the feels。 I'll admit the second half of the book felt a smidge tedious and the ending was inevitable and, therefore, predictable。 The Brennans plus Kale are messy and imperfect, but they love one another deeply。 And even with all the painful moments, you could fall back on that fact。 I thought this was well written and overall super enjoyable。 I freakin love sibling relationships, and this hit me in all the feels。 I'll admit the second half of the book felt a smidge tedious and the ending was inevitable and, therefore, predictable。 The Brennans plus Kale are messy and imperfect, but they love one another deeply。 And even with all the painful moments, you could fall back on that fact。 I thought this was well written and overall super enjoyable。 。。。more
